The next day, Mellissa and Abby are pulling me along everywhere to go see the Disney princesses and every other Disney character we possibly can. Mellissa manages to snap her pictures, and she smiles proudly and shows me the pictures she keeps getting of me when I'm not looking. Abby laughs every time, saying she helped. These two, I swear. Abby gets to play "musical chairs" with the Mad Hatter and Alice, and I record the whole thing because it's adorable and Mellissa can't stop laughing. No one gives us a sideways glance the entire time we're walking around holding hands or no matter how many times Mellissa wraps her arm around

A month later, they finally catch the man who threatened Mellissa, and by now the pandemonium surrounding her "outing" has slowed down, seeing as how she's refusing to resign and the school is refusing to let anyone bully her out of it. The schoolboard has had plenty of meetings that parents have been invited to that have discussed the importance of equality both in and out of the classroom, and why it's important to show our students that it's all right to be themselves. Several students have been relocated to different schools, even different towns. But the parents that have stayed seem determined to prove that they're differe

The police still haven't found whoever threatened Mellissa, but she insists that after her house is cleaned up, she'll go back. I don't like the idea of her basically putting herself in danger, but I can't talk her out of it. Still, it'll take a little while to paint over the graffiti, which means she'll be safe here. And Abby and I certainly aren't complaining having her over here.
"You silly princess. You're supposed to know how to tie your shoes by now," Mellissa smiles as she kneels down to tie Abby's shoes like the knight she is. "Just this once 'cause you're not feeling too well, ok?"
Abby coughs and nods her head. "M'

Two weeks later, Mellissa calls me. "Did you know we're famous?"
I narrow my eyes at her question. "What're you talking about?"
"Someone recorded that woman throwing soda at me at the mall in Chicago and uploaded it to YouTube, and it apparently went viral in HOURS, babe. They even made a story about it that very night on the news, but obviously we didn't watch the news, so we didn't hear it. And now it's in the papers and on the internet and we're all over the LGBT forums and...Olivia, we're everywhere. I was called into Principal Smith's office and I was this close to having a heart attack because I thought she was going t

Spring Break. A whole week off of school for Abby. And Mellissa has to go to a teacher's convention for three days. Which means we only get a few days of "family vacation time" as Abby keeps calling it. Abby wants so desperately to go to Disney World, but Mellissa and I have decided to save that for our Summer trip, so we've decided to go on a "girl's trip" to Chicago.
"So, how was the conference?" I ask Mellissa when we get on the train. Abby's never been on a train before, but Mellissa insisted it was cheaper and more fun than driving.
"Well, I still hate the way our educational system is heading," she sighs. "They keep thi

"Mommy! It's Christmas! Wake up! We hafta go pick up Ms.B and go to Grandpa's! Let's goooo! Get uuuup!"
Of course. How could I possibly expect to sleep in on Christmas with a six year old? "All right, all right, Abby. I'm up," I yawn.
"C'mon! We need to go get Ms.B!"
"Abby, honey, Mellissa and Grandpa are coming over HERE," I remind her. It seems she forgot what I told her last night. "And Grandpa isn't coming until tomorrow."
"Is Daddy gonna be here?" she asks.
My throat closes up, but I shake my head. "No, sweetheart, your dad isn't gonna be here."
She makes an unreadable face, but folds her hands. "Daddy's never co
